Ian is… a little cheesed off.
Hey there! Quick update on my videomakings today. I’ve already talked about this on stream, Twitter, as well as Patreon, but I figure this situation is worth dropping an update here on the ol’ dot com as well.
My latest movie review – a collab with Luke/yungtown where we talk about the DCOM classic Johnny Tsunami – is currently in Copyright ID hell over on YouTube. Despite my best efforts to trim down the offending movie clips to bypass the copyright robots, my review keeps getting auto-flagged and blocked worldwide.
After trimming down the clips as much as I’m comfortable with, the video was still getting flagged/blocked immediately. I’ve decided to submit a dispute while the video is unlisted, which means that I have to wait for Disney to look over my video and decide if they think it constitutes Fair Use. Disney has previously reviewed and cleared my Smart House (and maybe even my Thirteenth Year?) video, so in theory this shouldn’t be an issue and the copyright claim will be released. The only problem is that Disney gets a 30-day window to make their decision, and there’s nothing I can do but wait for them to pass judgement.
For now, the video is live exclusively over on my
Patreon for paid members. Honestly I have been trying to come up with more Patreon Perks as we head into 2024, so a bright spot in this whole situation is that I get to try out early premieres over there. (Another bright spot is that I get to try out disputing a Copyright claim on YT before the video even goes live, which is something I’ve never done before.) The Patreon exclusivity is only temporary, though, and I’ll set it live on YouTube as soon as Disney gives me the go-ahead.
I’m banking pretty hard on the idea that Disney will release the claim and let me post the video, because if they don’t… well that’s kind of a huge bummer. My only options at that point would be to trim the video down further until the YT copyright-bots leave me alone, or just post the video here on my website and avoid posting on YT completely. As much as I like the idea of a website exclusive video, it’d also be nice to make some money after working on the video so much. Perhaps I could do an edited-down version for YT, and post the “extended” review here on my site? I’ll just cross that bridge when I come to it.
In the meantime, I’m going to start working on my next video. I’ve given Johnny Tsunami as much attention as I can for the time being, and all I can do for him at the moment is hope for the best. I’m actually super stoked to get to work on my next video, I’ve been brainstorming for it the past few days and I really dig the ideas I’ve been coming up with.
So there you go, that’s what’s up with the latest video! Super sorry for the delay – if it were up to me it would have been posted days ago. At this point I’m just hoping I can post it within the month.
May Disney deem it fair use, and quickly! You are good at your reviews and no matter what the outcome I look forward to more of your content in the near future. (I’m broke af or I’d go watch on Patreon)
Worst comes to worst, you could release it like one of those TV podcasts? Those office ladies seem to be making bank from it.
Tagline: Disney sucks. Hope they allow you to post the video soon, iAN!
Dang, that’s unfortunate. fingers crossed Disney understands fair use!
Hopefully the process goes faster than expected.
On a sidenote – hopefully someday we can see portions of the KotH stuff.
fark disney….they better release that vid if they know what’s good for them
Yeah, I’m up for the two edits, if it comes down to it.
That stinks ! I look forward to seeing it soon.
Daaang, that sucks! Well, all things in good time… I’m looking forward to this one. fingers crossed that Disney approves (UGH), and if they don’t well… like you said, you have bridges to cross for if you get there.
Youtube is pretty ridiculous, they are super strict about usage of stuff, I wish would loosen up especially for those of us ( I am one) who gives them business by making content on their site, like if you don’t claim a song is yours but attribute whose it is clearly, I think that should be good instead of us all using the same free use tracks. It would be nice also if they had rewards for those who are not huge channels yet ( like me) whatever they wished, some kinda of encouragement/perk.
Hope we get to see it soon, I love your Luke collabs <3
