Ian is… brainboxing.
hey guys!! long time no blog. sorry about that.
it’s been a weird year in regards to my creative output, i think we can all agree. the TGI Friday’s video was one of my largest concept videos to date, but beyond that i really haven’t finished many videos this year. it’s not for lack of trying – i keep working on video projects that eventually fall through because i’m not happy with them. behind the scenes i was really feeling like something was gumming up the works, like my creative juices were all dried up. video work became really stressful, and i felt like i was forcing myself to do it rather than just enjoying the process of a creative hobby that i’ve always loved.
i think i’m finally over it. i hope. it sure feels like i am.
here’s what i’ve got in the works right now, and what i think the near-future looks like for the brutalmoose broadcast system:
BRUTALFOODS
a new brutalfoods is in production! it is not a “brutalfoods Adventure” like TGI Fridays or Snackables. i 100% plan on doing more of those kinds of videos, but i’m hoping to do more frequent regular episodes like the Hot Dog Taco video in between the high-concept adventures. the episode i’m currently working on is a taste test/review episode! won’t say what i’m eating, but i think you guys will enjoy it.
after finishing the TGI Friday’s video i was convinced that from here on out i wanted to do high-concept episodes only, but i’ve finally accepted that the pursuit would be stressful, exhausting, and i’d only get to post once every handful of months. that would drive me absolutely nuts – i need to make more things than just 1 or 2 videos a year or i’m going to lose it. so, there will be more regular brutalfoods on the way as i plan and prepare for the next food adventure.
BRUTALMOVIES
i’m working on a new solo movie review! i’m talking about a film that i’ve been wanting to cover for some time now, and i’m very excited about it. i won’t completely spill the beans, but i will say that it’s a family comedy from 2002 of which i owned a VHS copy. i’ve already got a script going that i hope to finish within the next couple of days!
i was pretty disappointed with the way my Johnny Tsunami video performed, and i think i let that discourage me from making more media reviews for a while. that was a dumb thing for me to do, because even though the YT Algorithm might not have liked it, i still think it was a solid video and it was nothing to be discouraged about. i even got to the point where i was telling myself that i didn’t really want to be a “reviewer” anymore, which is like wtf. reviewing and complaining are two of the main pillars of my life, how could i even consider giving those up?
as much as i’d love to get both of these videos out in August, i think it’s going to be one this month and one in September. if i was a betting man (which i am) i’d guess that the food video would come together faster than the movie review, but i’m very excited to work on both of them!
STREAM
my stream schedule might take a hit in the near future, i’ll be honest. i really, really love to stream, but i think part of what has been holding me back from getting invested in the craft of video making is that i’ve been committed to this M/W/F stream schedule.
the weird thing with streaming is that even if i try doing a shorter stream with the intention of working on videos afterwards, it’s very tough to switch gears. it’s pretty much either a “stream day” or a “video day”, and i flip-flop between them so often that it’s really hard to dig-in and get something done on either front, i always feel like im scrambling. on top of that, when i feel “forced” to do a stream instead of work on a video even though im in a video-mood, i’m often more irritable on stream.
lately i’ve been dreaming of taking a full week off from streaming just to focus on video work, which is a real wakeup call because at my core i am a video maker. making the videos should be taking priority. if i want a week off to work on videos, i should absolutely do that without hesitation. i love streaming and i’m never going to stop, but i can’t really justify letting it impede video work to the degree that it has.
that’s all a really wordy way to say that i think i’ve been letting my side-passion of streaming get in the way of making videos, so you might see me miss more streaming dates than usual coming up. i might even take a break from the M/W/F schedule all together and just go live whenever the moment is right. i know some regular viewers won’t love not knowing what days i’ll go live, but the reality is that there’s only so much ian to go around and he needs to be making more videos. also most people watch the VODs anyhow.
to end this section on a positive note, i do plan on working on the next season of Bingo whenever i get my video work back under control!
FEELIN’ GOOD
im actually extremely stoked to be working on this new stuff. for a while i’ve been feeling creatively lost and like i’m being pulled in too many directions at once. it’s taken me way too long to diagnose the issue and focus up, but i feel like i’m there.
i know this was a slow year for me so far in terms of videos, but i really am hoping to finish out the year strong. i’ll try to blog more, too. i get quiet on the blog when i dont have new projects to offer, but i should really get into the habit of blogging things besides just project updates. i’ll work on that.
thank you for reading, i hope this was a satisfactory update!
anybody out there watch the olympics this year? i’ve been really into the rock climbing and break dancing lately. BMX racing was also very good, same with skateboarding, rhythmic gymnastics, and artistic swimming. lots of really good stuff this year, and im sad that it’s over.
Glad to hear you’re feeling jazzed to work on stuff! And definitely understandable to take a more freeform vibe with the stream schedule. Do what works best for you. Switching gears can be tough for me too so I can definitely relate.
Give MJ a pat for me eh?
thanks so much!
mj is here and she seems pleased with the pet that i gave her on your behalf
Very excited about all of this! Especially the movie reviews!, always my favorite when you cover VHS or movies/shows. And i used to stream a lot, so i know it can be draining, (At least for me) So less streams is totally understandable! Loved the Johnny Tsunami video! sorry it didn’t do so well. Lookin forward to it all!
thank you, Pinata!
solid update! honestly, less frequent streams will FINALLY give me the chance to catch up on VODS. you’ve streamed too much for me to stay up to date!! i think maybe just a once a week stream would be a good way to scale it back, and you could keep that one day consistent just so people who prefer watching live over VODS can still know when toshow up. or just wing it. whatever works, man. i’m excited to see what’s in the works!
haha i love that less streams could be seen as a positive, at least for somebody. thanks ruska!
We love what you do, Ian. Thank you for your hard work!
thank you so much carly!
best of luck in your endeavors! i’m glad to hear you’re not giving up on movie reviews, those are some of my favorites from you!!! we’ll be looking forward to whatever you have in store (:
very excited to talk about some movies again! i hope you’ll enjoy
I loved the johnny Tsunami video! The algorithm is a cruel mistress indeed. Glad you’re feeling better man!
thanks bacon!
Thanks for sharing, Ian! I always appreciate hearing your inner thoughts on creating things and scheduling time for all of this. A lot of this is quite introspective and vulnerable to share, which I appreciate. I wish more creators were open in that way. Makes them more human.
Anyways, always love what you do, and it sounds like your proceeding in a very healthy and more fulfilling direction! Looking forward to your future projects and streams! 🙂
thanks jesse! glad you enjoy the inner-thoughts blogs. i don’t mind sharing the thoughts, i just worry that i’ll ramble.
as an avid follower since 2012, it seems to me that you are at peak ian performance when you follow your creative compulsions without second guessing them. since you have a lot of creative avenues (vids, music, drawing, streams, etc) the unfortunate truth is that some are going to have to take a backseat to let your current creative compulsion thrive within the process. forcing yourself onto a creative path that your mind and heart aren’t in just leads to frustration. on another note, does this mean that the barbie video is officially shelved? i know you were having a… Read more »
wise words, gba! i think a lot of my hangups come from trying to do it all at once, but you’re right that sometimes i have to take the gas off of one creative passion to focus on another. stepping away from something is not my strongest skill, but it’s one to work on! and i’m not sure about the barbie video. i don’t think it’s totally shelved, but i doubt i’ll release it as-is. i really think watching the High School Mystery stream is the superior version. i hadn’t considered releasing the rough video as a .com exclusive, though?… Read more »
hi ian! long time reader, occasional commenter i know that things like the algorithm can really affect motivation, or make you feel like that video you’ve created isn’t as good as you felt it is, but I want to wholeheartedly say that johnny tsunami is one of my favourite movie reviews that you’ve ever done! i didn’t grow up watching DCOMs, so watching your reviews is like watching these classic movies for the first time with a good friend! and i do more often than not watch your videos with good friends now too, haha. whenever you post a new… Read more »
thank you so much for the encouraging words, finn! and thanks for sticking with me for so long.
and hey best of luck with your writing! i totally agree that chasing your passion is the way to go (even if i have a hard time following that advice sometimes, haha)
I feel like it’s important to switch gears when needed and I’m glad you’re doing what’s best for you! Re: Olympics did you see the Australian breakdancer? I’ve been laughing for days (I am also Australian)
i definitely saw Raygun, haha. i was looking forward to Breaking since spotting it on the schedule, and it did not disappoint. though it did have some great laughs, there was also some real solid talent on display. i’d watch the event again were it to return to a summer olympics, but i have my doubts that it will.
Really excited for new Brutal Foods!! Thank you for the update and I’m glad you’re feeling back on track! 🙂 also the Olympic breakdancing was so amazing!! 😀
thanks k1mch1! i’ll try to serve up this new foods ASAP
this was definitely a very satisfactory update! i rarely chat on stream, but always watch the vods, so: guilty. 🙂
haha thanks lavarinth!
i’m a VOD watcher of other streams, myself, so i get it. it’s just so much easier that way!
As others have said, glad to hear you’re feeling creatively energized again! I’m a longtime VOD watcher (and napper? heh), so the thought of less streams for VODs is a little sad since they’ve been so comforting during this particularly rough season of my life. Completely understand that your passion is video making, which is why nearly all of us are here in the first place, and that is where your energy needs to go when the creative spark lights a flame. If you want to keep streaming, maybe switching to a T/TH schedule with an optional, floating weekend/weekday could… Read more »
thanks for the suggestions SJJ! i am still trying to figure out what to do with a bunch of stickers, and somehow hadn’t considered just (safely) sticking them on the wall.
and don’t worry! i’m not about to stop streaming, i just need a break from the rigid schedule. i’ll still go live and there will still be VODs. i just need some more freedom to pursue video work right now, but i’m not going anywhere.
Ian I am so glad you’re out of that rut and have found the right groove! Always do what your heart tells you to do ^^
I really liked the Johnny Tsunami video, so I think the algorithm is just screwing you over lol.
Thanks for the update! It’s always a pleasure to come back to your site. It’s all so pretty and I love the music. 😀
thank you very much Chee!
i’m glad you like my website! i should update the jukebox some time, honestly.. put some fresh tunes in there.
always good to hear from you moose!
I’ve always believed that being creative is like being constipated: when you can’t get things out, you feel like crap (pun intented). BUT, you also can’t strain yourself to push things out either. Sometimes you just have to adjust and let things flow naturally. (Even if that means cutting back on something).
All this to say, I’m glad your juices are flowing again! Take your time; skip some streams if you have to. Can’t wait to see what you create!
Keep up the good work, iAN. Creativity does feel like a well within you must find and tap into, but wells tend to dry up and sometimes we have to explore to find what else it is we can tap into. Thats not something you can force anymore than one can force water out of the ground by randomly stabbing it with a pickaxe. Its a well you must discover yourself by listening to that faint whispering trickle of music inside, that beckons forth to new possibilities within. I hear the sound become distant sometimes, and honestly the times I… Read more »
glad to hear you’re getting your drive back. you talked a few times on stream about being in a rut, and i was worried you’d step away from making videos altogether. everyone on the planet should be ignoring the “Algorithm” bs; it kills creativity and all you get in exchange is the worst audience imaginable. i’m really looking forward to seeing your next videos. stay hydrated
Wonderful update Ian! I originally subscribed on YouTube after enjoying your Brutalfoods reviews and then after coming down with the flu at the start of 2024 I finally decided to see what your bingo98 vods were all about and I got hooked! Anything you put out, I’ll definitely be here to watch. I do hope the Barbie Diaries video still makes the cut too! Thank you for becoming my comfort streamer this year, I’m excited to have some time to catch up on vods I missed while you’re working on videos! ☺️
hey ian! excited to hear about another media review, they’re some of my favorite things on your channel, so I’m glad you’ve decided to keep making them!
On the streaming front, I think trimming it back to where you need it to be makes sense. I like hanging out in stream, but if it’s adding stress, then something has to change! Maybe alternate days (M-W, one week, T-Th the next) or cutting a day or two a week could be a starting point!
I explained that weird – what I meant was alternating weeks like maybe a couple streams one week, and then none the next, or two days one week, one the next, yadda yadda, I’m sure it’s nothing you haven’t already though of lol
I am very happy that you want to make more videos.I discovered you because of my love of games.Anything you put into videos is great, your creations only get better.I know when you you are ready to stream again it will be a treat .I’m looking forward to more Bingo. The Olympics were wonderful,I tried to watch as much as I could.I liked the basketball, voleeyball , track and field.Swimming is my favorite.Looking forward to more videos.Love Laurie
I’m currently going through something similar. I have all these art projects that I want to do, but other hobbies get in the way of them. Plus I have been feeling unmotivated lately, but I’m trying to shake it off and readjust my time. I’m excited for all your upcoming videos! Wishing you the best!
The wife and I always enjoy all that you create. It’s so important to constantly check-in with yourself and do what’s best for iAN. Thanks for the many hours of entertainment and we are always excited for what comes next 🙂
Canvas We are given a blank canvas on which to paint upon And even though we will cover it with many brilliant colored images It will remain empty throughout it all In fact, there really is no canvas For our paintings are but stars We are all but reflections of the light we never saw Tomorrow is today Yesterday’s a dream Time is irrelevant but we don’t know what that means Most of us are painting by numbers Trying to stay within the lines Never realizing that everything was only inside our imaginary minds Our existence is our own invention… Read more »
Hey, Ian. I’ve been following your channel for what seems like over a decade (which is more than half of my life, if that makes you feel old lol), and I have been so proud to see your growth as a content creator over the years. You have honestly been such an inspiration to me through your very earnest and unique style of videos and make-whatever-you-personally-enjoy mentality, and I just wanted to say thank you. With that being said, I can definitely relate to you in terms of a lack of creative direction or focus. It’s definitely something that all… Read more »
Everytime you blog it inspired me for some reason. I don’t have any skills so it’s not a specific inspiration but more of like “maybe I should do something sick” type of thing. Always fun whenever you do anything so I’ll be waiting like everyone else. Also I was excited for the breaking but missed it and they took the replays off before we could watch. I was really interested in seeing the Aussie woman’s full run. I was super excited to see Phil Wizard and Hiro10 but I guess I’ll have to watch old Red Bull competitions. Other than… Read more »
So glad to hear you’re feeling over a creative hump! And, yeah, I thought the TGIF video was amazing!
I love hearing that you’ve found more comfort in switching gears this time around. This may sound particularly unhelpful, but I love all the media you create. Whether it be a stream, video, or blog post, it’s always a treat to see and engage. You’re a long time comfort creator of mine and many others, and you never fail to make my day better (even on a grumpy stream day). It’s just nice to know you’re around. I never hope to see you too upset with yourself, so if switching gears is the way to go, I’m all for it!… Read more »
A long ass time ago I remember you not having a stream schedule, and when you did get into a streaming mood the vibes of it were often better. I don’t fully know if that was because seeing you go live was extra exciting due to the surprise, or if you were in a much better mood, or both! And when I say better mood I don’t think you’re being pissy otherwise or something, you just end up goofier and excited during your “chosen” stream times. Coincidentally, yesterday I was watching your 30th birthday stream VOD and towards the end… Read more »
ive been watching you for years, you’re definitely my favorite youtuber ever, i did notice the recent lack of uploads but now i totally understand why. thanks for bein here dude, cant wait to see the new videos <3
Your wellbeing comes first, and I always enjoy the videos you seem to be happy in, so you do whatever you gotta and I’ll be content to watch old VODs in the meantime. You rock, don’t forget that!
I’ve been rewatching some of your older game review vids lately, and it really struck me how excited you were in those videos; just having a great time that was infectious. It feels like somewhere along the way you got so concerned with providing content you thought people wanted vs creating content that YOU wanted that some of the magic went missing. I’m glad to see you refocused and I hope you keep doing what you love, because that’s what gives we the viewers the most joy. Take care Moose.
You’re awesome. Keep on keeping on dude!
That is nice and all, but where is the Barbie PC game review coming?
I was worried when i hadn’t seen you on stream and forgot Discord was a thing and saw your update about this post. I’m so happy that your creative crank is turning again and i look forward seeing the creativity spew everywhere. Sounds like you plan to finish the year strong and i know I’m not the only one excited to be here when it happens.
Always check your girth before hitting the trail,
SirKayless.
I’m glad you didn’t let the poor performance deter you too much! I know the algorithm isn’t always kind to your non-food videos, but I do hope you keep making them (as well as the food videos of course), and I know everyone here will keep supporting whatever you may do 🙂
Excited as always to see what fun stuff you create next. It’s always a treat when there’s a new Brutalmoose vid to watch!
Wow. I didn’t know you posted this. I thought you had dissapeared. I’m an avid stream VoD watcher, so i thought you had quit. After searching for a while i found this post. Hope all is well. Looking forward to seeing some chill truck. Of course, only when the time is right!
More luke movie reviews I love when you and luke watch movies !!!!
Hi Ian, I was wondering if you were going to do anymore VHS Mystery Tapes episodes. I really enjoyed the concept, it was a lot of fun to watch.
Glad you’re back at it.
Cheers from Huntsville, TX
